SWIMMING SA SETS THE LOTTO RECORD STRAIGHT

Monday, 17th November 2008 - The relationship between Swimming SA and the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) has entered a new era following a recent meeting between officials from SSA and the NLB.

The meeting between the two organisations emphasised that the funding should showcase the Lotto’s commitment to swimming as part of the mutually beneficial relationship between them. During the meeting Swimming South Africa acknowledged that it could have provided additional recognition to the NLDTF for its contribution, through appropriate publicity.

The NLB reiterated that the reasons for withholding payment of outstanding grants to Swimming SA was the inadequate public acknowledgment of the over R43 million awarded to Swimming SA from the proceeds of the National Lottery.

Specific reference was made to Swimming SA’s not acknowledging National Lottery funding in TV interviews, recognition on the SSA website was given only to 2 other funders, the recent press articles which Swimming SA did not explain why the grants were withheld and also Swimming SA’s refusal to submit an article on funding it received for the NLB’s souvenir brochure.

Speaking in Johannesburg today, Shaun Adriaanse, CEO of Swimming SA said his organisation had taken note of the requests of the NLDTF of the publicity that it wished to receive as a result of its funding, and hoped that, as a result, any misunderstandings in the past would not recur.

Since the inception of the NLDTF, Swimming SA has been allocated R43.7-million in funding from the organisation, of which about R18-million was for the development and upgrade of facilities around the country.

“The NLDTF has agreed to release funds once Swimming SA set the record straight and presented a report on other publicity given to the NLDTF. We have also received a publicity document so that we can ensure we meet all publicity requirements,” said Adriaanse.
