Lifesaving South Africa working for safer water spaces
2010: NLDTF grant R4 million
Local beaches, dams, rivers and swimming pools are the playgrounds for hundreds of children and youth, many of whom do not know how to swim and are unaware of the dangers and challenges they may encounter. The proof of this are the rising statistics of tragic drowning incidents.
NLDTF funding supports the 75-year old NGO Lifesaving South Africa, which has 65 clubs across the country and enjoys a following of 6000 voluntary members, as well as affiliates of Lifesaving SA.
The organisation educates and trains lifeguards, provides water safety programmes along the coastline and inland, and participates in and develops the sport of lifesaving.
Training programmes focus on water safety, basic resuscitation and lifesaving rescue techniques. Lifesaving SA also contributes to the creation of job opportunities and supplies 99% of professional lifeguards who are employed by municipalities, private lifeguard services, hotels, local and international resorts and other recreational aquatic sites.
