DISTRIBUTION AGENCIES

The Act prescribes the manner in which people are to be appointed as members of a Distributing Agency. It requires the Minister of Trade and Industry, in consultation with the Minister responsible for the particular sector, to appoint people "with the required skills and expertise to distribute the allocated funds fairly and equitably amongst all persons who meet the prescribed requirements". In May 2000, The Department of Trade and Industry published a call for nominations from the public for people to serve on the Distributing Agencies for the following categories:

  • Arts, Culture and National Heritage
  • Charities
  • Sport and Recreation.

All nominations were subject to assessment and extensive probity checks were carried out. The Minister of Trade and Industry consulted with his cabinet colleagues responsible for Welfare, Arts & Culture, Environmental Affairs and Sport and Recreation. Thereafter, a shortlist was presented to Cabinet for approval. This process was completed in November 2000 and the Agency Members met for the first time in February 2001 for a policy workshop. The Minister of Trade and Industry gave the Distributing Agency Members a briefing as required by the Act and appointed Chairpersons for each of the three Distributing Agencies.
