Legislation Description Status
Lotteries Act (No 57 of 1997) Framework legislation for lottery regulation, management of the National Lottery, establishment of National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund and allocation of National Lottery proceeds to good causes Remains most important legislation on lotteries. Amended several times
Lotteries Amendment Act (No 10 of 2000) Removes the prohibition on participation of certain persons in the National Lottery Currently in effect
Lotteries Amendment Act (No 46 of 2001) Inserts detailed provisions on the regulation of promotional competitions into the principal Act (Section 54) Section 54 no longer in effect. Replaced by Section 36 of the Consumer Protection Act
Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (No 12 of 2004) Inserts provisions in the Lotteries Act under Sections 3 and 51. They deal respectively with action to be taken against board members and managers of society lotteries who are charged with and/or convicted of corruption or related crimes

Section 16 of the Act deals with corruption in relation to gambling and games of chance

Consumer Protection Act (No 68 of 2008) Section 36 deals extensively with the regulation of promotional competitions. Repeals the corresponding section (Section 54) in the Lotteries Act In effect from October 2010
