1000th LOTTERY BENEFICIARY
Township Aids Project (TAP) based in White City, Soweto is the 1000th beneficiary to receive their grant from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF). R270,000.00 was transferred into their bank account. This grant will help them continue with the service they offer their community.

TAP has been in operation since 1990 and is actively involved in creating public awareness of HIV/AIDS through its information centre; care and support centre; and training workshops for trainers. Trade and Industry Minister, Alec Erwin, presented the cheque to Ms. Enea Motaung, Director of TAP on behalf of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) at a presentation ceremony in White City, Soweto on 7th May 2002.

For the year-ending 31 March 2002, the NLDTF allocated a total of R224,128,484.24 to 1 240 beneficiaries around the country. A full list of beneficiaries will be made public in the next weeks. The first payment was made in July 2001, just two months after the closing date for applications. Transfer of funds to the beneficiaries take place only once the beneficiary has returned the signed Funding Agreement. Beneficiaries also have to submit a cancelled cheque that is used to verify bank details.

Each week Uthingo Management transfers the portion of lottery takings allocated to good causes to the NLDTF. The funds that are accumulated are only allocated in the following financial year. By doing this, the Distributing Agencies are aware beforehand of the amount of funds they have available for distribution.

All unspent funds for the Arts, Culture and National Heritage; Charities; and Sport and Recreation categories will be carried over to the 2002/2003 financial year. The same applies to the RDP and Miscellaneous Purposes categories, which did not call for applications. Grants are only made to applicants that meet the specific criteria laid down for each of the beneficiary categories.
