Dear Sir
LOTTO MONEY FOR SPORT
NS Blease’s letter in this morning’s Cape Times has
reference.
The reader can rest assured that none of the funds generated
for good causes by the National Lottery is added to the coffers of the Ministry
of Sport and Recreation. None of the good cause monies are added to the budget
of Government.
There are five beneficiary categories of funds generated by
the National Lottery viz.:
-
Arts, Culture and National
Heritage
-
Charities
-
Miscellaneous Purposes
-
RDP
-
Sport and Recreation
The National Lotteries Board is the regulator of the National
Lottery and manages the funds allocated to these sectors. Applications for
funding are adjudicated by publicly nominated members of the relevant
Distributing Agency, who are experts in their field and who determine the extent
of the grants to successful beneficiaries.
In the last financial year (1 April 2003 to 31 March 2004),
over R1,2 billion was allocated to more than 1 800 beneficiary groups.
Distribution to the sectors were as follows:
-
Arts, Culture and National
Heritage: R375,4m to 267 beneficiaries
-
Charities: R613,1m to 1144
beneficiaries
-
Miscellaneous Purposes:
R17,4m to 1 beneficiary
-
Sport and Recreation: R252,4m
to 390 beneficiaries
Since inception of the National Lottery more than R2,2
billion has been allocated to more than 5 000 beneficiaries from all corners of
our country.
Yours faithfully
NATIONAL LOTTERIES BOARD
