Dear Sir

LOTTO DRAW IS NOT “A PRE-RECORDED SCAM”

Ms. Joan Losch’s letter in this morning’s publication has reference.

As the Regulator of the National Lottery we would like to assure Ms Losch that the Lotto draw is not a “pre-recorded scam”.

The draw is indeed performed live, as screened on e-tv, and in the presence of an independent auditor.  The entire draw process is detailed in the Licence to Operate the National Lottery and is monitored by the Board with other compliance checks.

Nimrod Nkosi, host of the draw, is given a list with comments on each number. As the numbers are drawn, he reads out the comments from his notes linked to the particular number.

Uthingo Management, operator of the National Lottery, has on several occasions explained the draw process.  Further, live draws have been held in public spaces in Cape Town (Canal Walk), Durban (Gateway Shopping Centre), Bloemfontein (Sanlam Centre), Johannesburg (Cresta Shopping Centre) and most recently in Mmabatho (Mmabatho Civic Centre).  These draws are widely publicised and the public is encouraged to attend to witness that the draw is conducted with integrity.

We would like to assure your readers that it is an important function of the Board to ensure that the rights of the lottery participants are protected.  The Board takes this seriously and will strive to protect the players at all cost.

Ms Losch is welcome to contact Uthingo Management to arrange for her to witness a live draw.

Yours faithfully

NATIONAL LOTTERIES BOARD
