Dear Sir
LOTTO IS CONSTANTLY
MONITORED
Andrew Clark and MP Rademeyer’s concerns in Friday’s edition
has reference.
We would like to assure the writers and your readers that the
National Lottery is run under Licence by Uthingo Management (Pty) Ltd. The
Licence makes provision for various games, each with its own rules.
Prizes
are determined by ticket sales and a pre-determined formula contained in the
rules. In terms of the formula for Lotto, 18.25% of the prize fund is set aside
for the jackpot. If the jackpot has not been won, the amount is added to the
next jackpot.
With
guaranteed jackpots, Uthingo commits itself to paying the guaranteed amount
to the winner/s, irrespective of the volume of ticket sales. Should the sales
be exceptionally high resulting in a prize higher than the guaranteed amount,
the higher amount will be paid.
The
operation of the National Lottery is closely monitored by the National Lotteries
Board, appointed in terms of the Lotteries Act (No 57 of 1997). In monitoring
the National Lottery, the Board verifies the ticket sales, prize calculation,
prize payout etc.
We would
like to assure Messrs. Clark and Rademeyer and the lottery-playing public, that
the Board will continually ensure that the National Lottery is run in terms of
the Licence and with due integrity.
It is
through the participation in the National Lottery by South Africans that over 6
100 beneficiary groups have shared more than R2,96 billion raised for good
causes.
