Dear Sir

LOTTO RESPONSIBILITY

Your lead story in Tuesdays’ edition and your Comment in today’s edition have reference.

Salaries of the National Lotteries Board are determined by the Minister of Trade and Industry in consultation with the Minister of Finance and are linked to that of the Civil Service.  The salary of the Chairperson of the Board is equivalent to that of a Director-General in Government and the salary of the CEO is equivalent to that of a Deputy Director-General.

A breakdown of the salaries of the Board Members, the CEO and Members of the Distributing Agencies have been included in the Annual Report of the Board in 2003 and 2004.  The Annual Report is tabled in Parliament and is distributed to all Members of Parliament. The report is also available to the public on the Board’s website, www.nlb.org.za

It is the responsibility of the National Lotteries Board to regulate the National Lottery and all other games of chance in the country.  The National Lottery is operated under licence by a private consortium, Uthingo Management (Pty) Ltd. The Board ensures that the National Lottery is conducted with due propriety and in terms of the Licence Agreement.

A major responsibility of the Board is the oversight and distribution of the funds set aside for good causes. Each year approximately 7 000 applications are received in the areas of Charities, Sport and Recreation, and Arts, Culture and National Heritage.  Since the inception of the National Lottery in 2000, over 6 100 non-profit organisations have been allocated over R2,96 billion raised for good causes.  Further, the Board also has under investment almost R3 billion raised by the National Lottery for good causes.

Rules of all National Lottery games are approved by the Minister of Trade and Industry and no deviations are allowed.  Your readers are advised that the National Lotteries Board will ensure that the integrity of the National Lottery is maintained and that their Lotto rands are distributed in terms of the Licence.
