Dear Ms. Geldenhuis,

LOTTERY FUNDS TO ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY

The letter from AWS Supporter in the District Mail of 8 August 2005 has reference.

We would like to disagree with the writer when he/she says that Animal Welfare Society gets no funding from the National Lottery or Lotto.

The following Animal Welfare Societies have received funding form the National Lottery in the past financial year:

  1. Knysna AWS: R369,000.00
  2. Port Elizabeth AWS: R356,916.00
  3. Hermanus AWS: R1 million

Since all our funding is application based, we can only consider organisations that submit a completed application form, together with the correct supporting documentation, by the advertised closing date.

Since the inception of the National Lottery in March 2000, over 7 000 beneficiaries have qualified for National Lottery funding bringing the total allocated to good cause to more than R3,4 billion.  For this, thanks have to go to all those that play the National Lottery.

For AWS Supporter to publicly say that National Lottery funding has not been awarded to Animal Welfare Society is therefore unwarranted and extremely misleading.  A full list of all National Lottery beneficiaries can be seen in our Annual Report that is posted on our website, www.nlb.org.za

Kind regards
